BLOG POST #2 - Week 5
Common Core in Action: Reviving the Civic Mission of Schools
This was a pretty cool article, which was mainly
about integrating the education civic responsibility into the daily lessons of
modern students through the common core.
Taking Action...
“… The civic promise of the Common Core is not self-executing
-- If we don't decide that this is going to be a priority in Common Core implementation,
it won't happen” (O’Brien, 2013).
As educators, we must…
·
Select curriculum that includes
topics of civic relevance
·
Train teachers to facilitate
discussion of policy issues and contentious topics
·
Ensure assessments cover issues of
civic relevance
·
Determine what quality looks like
in this arena
·
Define the value proposition for
students
“Common Core advocates also need to talk about this aspect of
the initiative as central to its purpose and success” (O’Brien, 2013).
I think it is a great to incorporate more of what is
happening in the world around students into daily routines. However, as an educator, I am not sure if it
is feasible to make it mandatory on a daily basis. It is hard enough to squeeze in all that we
have to teach on a daily basis as it is, let alone the new requirements that
keep piling up.
